Karnataka Rajyotsava 2025 – History, Significance & Celebrations
Karnataka Rajyotsava, also known as Karnataka Formation Day or Kannada Rajyotsava, is celebrated every year on November 1. The day marks the historic moment in 1956 when all Kannada-speaking regions were unified to form the state of Karnataka. It’s a day of pride, unity, and cultural celebration for millions of Kannadigas across the world.
The History of Karnataka Rajyotsava
Before 1956, the Kannada-speaking areas were spread across various regions such as the Bombay Presidency, Madras Presidency, Hyderabad State, and the Princely State of Mysore. On November 1, 1956, under the States Reorganisation Act, these regions were merged to form a single state called Mysore, which was later renamed Karnataka in 1973.
This unification was the result of the efforts of many great Kannada leaders, writers, and activists who dreamed of bringing together all Kannada-speaking regions under one administration. Their determination gave birth to the modern-day Karnataka we know today.
